eeePC = your new best friend

Forget having real friends anymore – too much hastle. The eeePC is the perfect drop-in replacement for all that icky “social network”.

Seriously! A $500 laptop thats about as light as 2 mobile phones with no moving parts and comes installed with Linux by default! How can you go wrong?

I started my journey 3 weeks ago with a white 4G Asus eeePC with the standard Xandros based install (Linux distro). I used the factory installed OS until last weekend when I finally wanted to take back control and install Debian Lenny onboard. I’m surprised at how well it went!

I now have a full desktop running with all the tools I need to run the business and entertainment. I’ve also never had a laptop with such powerful wireless capabilities before. The Atheros based Wifi Card onboard is awesome! I can see access points from streets away!

I run XFCE4 as my window manager as Gnome can be a little heavy and space restrictive on the tiny 7inch screen, I also have to make sure that Thunderbird and Firefox (Icedove and Iceweasel in Debian respectively) both use the “Use Small Icons” option to maximise my viewing area. But other than that its flawless – and attractive.

When you arrive and open this little puppy it really turns heads – the ultimate mobile computer without losing the ability to type.

Downsides? Well no… unless you’re like certain people on certain Linux lists that simply want to whinge about the small keyboard – seriously its a small device to be SMALL – I can now type at full speed – but watch that full stop – you don’t want to accidentally wipe out more than you bargained for while typing commands at a terminal with 2 dots instead of 1….

Watch this space for a montage of myself any my eeePC enjoying long walks on the beach together…
