Custom technology build for Rebecca Baumann’s “Mixed Feelings” April 2012.

Multicoloured strips of paper are fed from the ceiling to drop to the floor once every minute filling the floor with multicolour paper.

The dynamic Cake duo went on an excursion to Footscray Community Arts Centre for development of a couple of current projects, Auto Auto and M.U.L.E. The Basement Theatre was the perfect space for working on our self driving robot cars and robot pack mule!

We added a central ultrasonic sensors and two side infra-red sensors to each of our Maverick Strada XT RC cars, both controlled by an on-board micro-controller so that they can avoid obstacles, and navigate a course by themselves. We named them Squig1 & Squig2 because of the sounds they make when they steer. We attached a tiny video camera to the front of one of the Squigs to see what they see!

To M.U.L.E. we gave the ability to turn upon sensing an obstacle – with the ultimate goal of following a sensor attached to a person’s clothing.

For an upcoming project we have been asked to integrate sensing functionality. To get this off the ground we developed these cool nodes to test with.

M.U.L.E. is a robotic following cart we are building from a mobility scooter base. M.U.L.E. will be fully automated, controlled by an Arduino, using sensors to avoid obstacles.

He has a front sensor at the moment so he can approach objects, and back up when he is too close. This is mainly to test our control over the heavy duty motors and control systems.

Next up: Rear and side sensors and steering/following functionality.

For a new project in development, “Auto Auto”, we are modding a remote controlled car to sense and avoid obstacles on it’s own.

With an Arduino and ultrasonic distance sensor on board this little guy drives himself!

This hacked $2 Mustang is the fruits of one afternoon’s tinkering.

We hope to develop and refine the model and replicate the results across multiple body types to experiment with interplay between them.

We are also looking at a large scale version of this with a mobility scooter we recently found.

A new project in development we have installed in our front window.

A wall of bricks made of perspex containing rgb leds rigged in a 5×5 grid controlled by an Arduino.

Getting really awesome results so far, looking forward to playing around more with colours and patterns!
